In 1998, Rosalind Thomas-Clark was appointed the first Chair of Theatre at the opening of the new Boston Arts Academy for the Performing and Visual Arts. The following ten years proved to be one of the most fulfilling and creative periods for her in her career in arts and education, both as a teacher and director. See below for some of the productions created and/or directed by Ms. Thomas-Clark for Boston Arts Academy (BAA).
The years at BAA included building an interdisciplinary curriculum while working with an urban population. Incorporating Howard Gardner’s methodology, Ms. Thomas-Clark focused on his theory of multiple intelligences, challenging her students to explore their own potential and to work as an ensemble. This culminated in her leaving BAA to start her own alumni theatre company, TC SQUARED: New Theatre Outside the Box.
The Arts Academy’s dual curriculum model of education is internationally recognized. The school accepts students on an academic-blind basis, and 95% of students go on to college. At BAA, half the day is spent in academic study, and half in the arts discipline, so students are inspired by their passion and successes in the arts to flourish in their academics.
While at BAA, Ms. Thomas-Clark received many honors and awards. In 2003, she was the recipient of a SURDNA Arts Teacher’s Fellowship to study with Augusto Boal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the Center for the Theatre of the Oppressed. She was awarded Boston’s Teacher of the Year Award in 2005, and a SURDNA Artist Colony Grant in 2008. She continues her connection with the school as a teacher of Master Classes, a Panelist, and as a member of the Council of Advocates.
